How to keep your steering wheel cover in good condition

Sweat, the skin’s natural oils and dirt are the main causes of wear and tear on the upholstery. Avoid driving immediately after applying creams, lotions or hand sanitisers, as their chemical components cause the leather and Alcantara to deteriorate rapidly.

Use only cleaners specifically designed for automotive leather or Alcantara. Avoid household all-purpose cleaners, wet wipes, or products containing alcohol or solvents. These harsh products dry out the material, strip away its dye and destroy its protective layer.

UV rays and prolonged exposure to high temperatures can dry out, fade and crack the material on your steering wheel. Get into the habit of always placing a sunshade on the windscreen when parking outdoors to significantly extend the life and colour of the material.

Constant or accidental contact with rings, bracelets, watches or even long fingernails can cause irreversible marks, indentations and cuts on the surface of the upholstery. Take particular care when manoeuvring or turning the steering wheel quickly to avoid this damaging friction.

Just like human skin, the natural leather on your steering wheel needs to be kept moisturised to retain its suppleness. Apply a conditioner or protective cream specifically designed for automotive leather every 3 or 4 months to prevent it from cracking and to keep it feeling soft.

To clean and dry your steering wheel, always use soft, clean microfibre cloths without any thick seams. Apply the product to the cloth (not directly to the steering wheel) and gently work it into the surface without rubbing too hard, and never use stiff-bristled brushes.
